DeLorme has created a new
Serious Tool that makes it easy to navigate using the widest variety of maps available on a GPS.December 2008
The new PN-40 incorporates a new 32 channel cartesio GPS chip set for improved reception and a dual processor to allow you to view 1 Meter black & white or color aerial imagery, Hi-res imagery for urban areas, USGS quads, NOAA charts and vector topo.
You can overlay any of these maps with roads, elevation contours or even your own data. Make your own maps!
The new GPS also incorporates a 3-axis electronic compass and barometric altimeter that can be automatically calibrated.
Geocaching support includes long hints, special icons and more. Mac geocaching support in the works.
I was able to beta-test one of these beauties for 4 months. The PN-40 allows display of all 140 tracks = 1400+ miles of GeoBiking trails on top of the imagery of choice (on my PN or yours). Screen redraws are fast, even with the 12+ GigaBytes of imagery I have loaded on it. The imagery allowed me to find continuous old logging cuts in the White River forest to let me avoid dead ends and dead-falls. The countour lines gave depth to the imagery - just awesome in action.
Sample screen image below showing ability to follow old logging roads (on foot) instead of crawling over dead-falls.
DeLorme provided beta-testers a unique geocoin to spread around the country. I left a coin along a trail I mapped. Until it is found, I will provide more clues to their location with new images.
Please keep checking back for clues.
